Fulfill The Law Of Christ (Galatians 6:6-10)

Rev. William L. BarronRev. William L. Barron, October 23, 2022
Part of the Morning Worship at North Greenville Church series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

What is our responsibility to our brother, assuming we are walking in the Spirit? Paul points to three things: restore, bear and share. As spiritual people, do we take pride in our piety--fasting, study, retreats, church activities, and so forth? Do we try to impress others that we are "spiritual"? Truly, our goal should be to maintain a right relationship with Christ. We should offer a witness that encompasses the five solas of the reformation, reconciliation with God in Christ: Sola Fide – by faith alone, Sola Scriptura: by Scripture alone, Solus Christus: through Christ alone, Sola Gratia: by grace alone, Soli Deo Gloria: glory to God alone. We should evidence the Holy Spirit working in our lives. We should seek to restore those given over to transgression. This is the job of everyone in the church. These situations should be resolved before the need to invoke church discipline as outlined in Matthew 18: 15-17. The whole purpose of this process is not removal but restoration, employing the Word and the Holy Spirit. Restoring is putting something back in place, such as mending nets. This is the Law of Christ: if we love one another, we will care to restore the wayward sheep to fellowship. Besides restoring, we must bear one another's burdens. Luther wrote that we must have strong shoulders and mighty bones. We all have burdens, and we are told to cast our burdens upon the Lord. We can't fix everyone's problems. Augustine counsels us to minister with humility above all, considering others as more important. We are to put our burdens down and shoulder others' burdens. Is vs. 5 a contradiction compared with vs. 2? Vs. 2 refers to a load that is too heavy. Vs. 5 refers to a light load. We are not to neglect our own responsibilities. The final responsibility presented by Paul is that of sharing our pastor's ministry to others. By this we show the work of the church to others, walking led by the Spirit, and keeping in step with Him. We are not to grow weary. Isaiah teaches us that the Lord never slumbers or sleeps; we must wait upon Him. God will often bring us opportunities to share burdens.

Galatians 6:6–10 (Listen)

Let the one who is taught the word share all good things with the one who teaches. Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.
