Let Love... (Hebrews 13:1-8, Deuteronomy 31:1-6)

Rev. William L. Barron, February 27, 2022
Part of the Morning Worship at North Greenville Church series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

Brotherly love means a deep fellowship in Christ with other believers. It is a requirement for leaders and members. We cannot neglect to show hospitality, remembering that some people have hosted angels unawares. We are to show care for others. One group is prisoners, who in new testament times were highly dependent on family and friends for basic needs. Today, hospitality includes helping out with meals, visiting and setting up prayer chains. We must look for ways to volunteer our talents toward being hospitable, loving and caring. Marital love is the building block of society. We must hold true to God's institution of marriage, protecting it within our families and churches. Marriage is the only context within which sexual relations are to take place. Sexual purity is an important aspect of salvation. Materialistic love is expressed toward money and anything that money can buy. This kind of love can breed greed and covetousness. We must remember that everything we have comes from God. Paul had to learn how to be content, and we know that God is near and with us; He will never leave or forsake us. The opposite of materialistic love is love for God and for the brethren, which go together. If God is with us, we do not need to fear, since when we die, we are with God. Are we moving to trust God more? We need to have love for our leaders, who are called to show the character of God. God's goal for us is transformation more and more into the likeness of Jesus. The basic message of the gospel does not change with the times. We are to love our triune God and also one another.

Hebrews 13:1–8 (Listen)

13:1 Let brotherly love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say,

  “The Lord is my helper;
    I will not fear;
  what can man do to me?”

Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

Deuteronomy 31:1–6 (Listen)

31:1 So Moses continued to speak these words to all Israel. And he said to them, “I am 120 years old today. I am no longer able to go out and come in. The LORD has said to me, ‘You shall not go over this Jordan.’ The LORD your God himself will go over before you. He will destroy these nations before you, so that you shall dispossess them, and Joshua will go over at your head, as the LORD has spoken. And the LORD will do to them as he did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when he destroyed them. And the LORD will give them over to you, and you shall do to them according to the whole commandment that I have commanded you. Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”
