Role Playing (Ephesians 4:11-16, Psalm 103:17-22)

Rev. Tim Leslie, May 7, 2023
Part of the Morning Worship at North Greenville Church series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

Descriptions of the church in scripture include house, body and army. The army analogy brings to mind the accomplishments of Hannibal, the great Carthaginian general. In 215 BC during the Second Punic War, he marshalled 90,000 infantry and 9,000 cavalry, an army drawn from many nations. He held them together for a world-encompassing (at the time)campaign against Rome that saw him conquer most of Italy. Likewise, the church embarks on a world-encompassing campaign with workers drawn from may nations. Their method does not use force, however, but it is assembled by a sort of roll call placing the workers in a variety of roles. These include apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors and teachers, following their greatest role model--Jesus, who equips them to carry out their roles. Church membership is not a spectator sport. The church calls the roll to engage in works of service to build up the whole body. The world should see our unity and maturity. We must strive to please Christ, not each other. If we revert to our previous role as children or into our past life before salvation, we will be tossed to and fro by error. Since it is easy to revert, growth is essential. We must constantly be in God's Word. If we revert, we become a drag on Christ's work. We are the church's building stones. We should speak to one another in Psalms and other spiritual phrases, making allusions to scripture. Thus we will have true fellowship in Christ, functioning as a unit. Also, by good works come growth. We are not randomly stuck together; our harmony is in Him. Our strength and harmony cannot come from our pastors, only from Christ. Christ showed ultimate love on the cross, anticipating the joy that was before Him, in the church.

Ephesians 4:11–16 (Listen)

11 And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ, 13 until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ, 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love.

Psalm 103:17–22 (Listen)

17   But the steadfast love of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear him,
and his righteousness to children’s children,
18   to those who keep his covenant
and remember to do his commandments.
19   The LORD has established his throne in the heavens,
and his kingdom rules over all.
20   Bless the LORD, O you his angels,
you mighty ones who do his word,
obeying the voice of his word!
21   Bless the LORD, all his hosts,
his ministers, who do his will!
22   Bless the LORD, all his works,
in all places of his dominion.
Bless the LORD, O my soul!
