Kingdom Life (Matthew 4:23-5:2, Psalm 119:33-40)

Rev. William L. BarronRev. William L. Barron, July 16, 2023
Part of the Morning Worship at North Greenville Church series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

Jesus' genealogy in Matthew begins with Abraham. In this genealogy are five women, all of whom are sort of outcasts by birth or sin. Matthew then devotes 8 verses to the birth of Jesus. In Chapter 3, Matthew describes the ministry of John the Baptist, who came in the spirit of Elijah. He told all who would listen to get ready for the coming of the winnowing fork, that they must repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand. In Chapter 4, Matthew describes Jesus' temptation by Satan, His ministry in Capernaum, His calling of the disciples, His preaching of repentance, teaching about the Kingdom and healing of the sick. He attracted huge crowds. He taught there is only one way to obtain peace with God, and that is through faith in Him. He distinguished between the earthly kingdom and the heavenly kingdom, and that we are to be warriors against sin and iniquity. In the Sermon on the Mount, he taught how we are to live in the Kingdom of God. Jesus calls for us to be transformed. If we are not in the Kingdom, the Son of Man doesn't mean anything to us. We must know and embrace His teachings for us to grow. If we study, we will realize the necessity of the new birth that comes in Christ and dictates blessings in Him. He will show us how to please God.

Matthew 4:23–5:2 (Listen)

23 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. 24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, those having seizures, and paralytics, and he healed them. 25 And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.

5:1 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

Psalm 119:33–40 (Listen)

He

33   Teach me, O LORD, the way of your statutes;
    and I will keep it to the end.
34   Give me understanding, that I may keep your law
    and observe it with my whole heart.
35   Lead me in the path of your commandments,
    for I delight in it.
36   Incline my heart to your testimonies,
    and not to selfish gain!
37   Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things;
    and give me life in your ways.
38   Confirm to your servant your promise,
    that you may be feared.
39   Turn away the reproach that I dread,
    for your rules are good.
40   Behold, I long for your precepts;
    in your righteousness give me life!
