'Come And See" (Matthew 28:1-7, Psalm 11:1-7)

Rev. William L. BarronRev. William L. Barron, March 31, 2024
Part of the Morning Worship at North Greenville Church series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

The story of the resurrection as covered by the four gospels. What is the emphasis by Matthew? First, He is not there. Second, check out the grave. Third, they have an invitation, "Come and see." Fourth, "Go and tell." Matthew is about telling the story of Jesus Christ and the resurrection. Paul was in prison in Rome for the second time. He wrote a letter to Timothy. "Timothy, remember Jesus Christ, risen from the dead." He has risen, He is alive. The resurrection is important to us. Rudolph Bultmann proclaimed that there are myths in the Bible. He ended up doing away with Christianity. Matthew gives facts. In early morning, the women knew where they were going to finish the caring for Jesus' body. An earthquake came, and the soldiers and the women were filled with fear. The angels told the women not to fear. He was risen, just as He said. John and Peter saw the stone and the grave cloths and believed. The empty tomb is a witness to us of Jesus' victory and resurrection. He is alive in heaven making intercession for us. The resurrection is important to us. Without the resurrection only feelings remain. Jesus defeated death, and we have life. Without the resurrection, we have no hope. The truth is that Jesus is the way to the Father. We must encourage people to check out the evidence of the resurrection, including the change of the disciples and their courage. The Great Commission is a charge to all of us.

Matthew 28:1–7 (Listen)

28:1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.”

Psalm 11 (Listen)

To the choirmaster. Of David.

11:1   In the LORD I take refuge;
  how can you say to my soul,
    “Flee like a bird to your mountain,
  for behold, the wicked bend the bow;
    they have fitted their arrow to the string
    to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart;
  if the foundations are destroyed,
    what can the righteous do?”
  The LORD is in his holy temple;
    the LORD’s throne is in heaven;
    his eyes see, his eyelids test the children of man.
  The LORD tests the righteous,
    but his soul hates the wicked and the one who loves violence.
  Let him rain coals on the wicked;
    fire and sulfur and a scorching wind shall be the portion of their cup.
  For the LORD is righteous;
  he loves righteous deeds;
    the upright shall behold his face.
