LIMPING BETWEEN TWO DIFFERENT OPINIONS

This Sunday Pastor Barron brings a message from I Kings 18:20-46, entitled, “Elijah: A Man of Prayer”.

One against 450 doesn’t sound like very good odds, but Elijah’s name means “My God is Yah”, which is short for YAHWEH, which is translated as Lord. Elijah has instructed Ahab to gather all of Israel with the prophets numbering 450, and now he’s addressing the people with the question “How long will you go limping between two different opinions?” He then renders a challenge to their thinking, and yet, no one answers him. Soon Israel will see the breach for their wavering conduct, as Elijah orders an illogical preparation for the altar he’s rebuilt. Then with a short, forthright prayer, God answers him.

These two verses are Paul's thesis statement for the whole book. Paul joyously presents what God has done to bring us salvation, by means of the saving power of God. The gospel of God is the gospel of His son. Salvation is all of God and not of man, available to both Jews and Greeks, and also to the barbarians. The gospel is called into contempt by the world, yet Paul was not ashamed to preach it. For Jews, a crucified messiah made no sense. He was cursed for hanging on a tree, right? For gentiles, it was foolishness for a man to claim to be the savior who would then be found guilty, condemned and crucified. It is often the same in our day for Christians in the public forum. It would be easy to be ashamed of the gospel in the face of criticism. But, how can we be ashamed of the power of God? He creates by His Word, from nothing. He brought His people out of slavery in Egypt. God's power is effective in salvation of poor, lost, enslaved sinners by the means of preaching, considered folly by many, who are perishing. In this, He rescues us from the judgment we deserve. The Word is power to save people. Preachers are to preach the true Word of God. We must talk about the reasons we need salvation, beyond salvation in itself, that is, the judgment and wrath of God that leads to destruction. Those that do believe demonstrate the power of the gospel by their changed lives. When the gospel is preached, it calls for a response. By this response we know that God is in our midst. To some, the lost, the gospel is a stench. In the Psalms we learn that in the gospel, God's righteousness is revealed in salvation as part of His covenant promises. God provides what we need to be reconciled to Him, that is His righteousness. He declares this upon us by faith in His Son. By this comes the substitutionary atonement that purchases our justification. We stand forgiven and clean, no longer guilty. Now, we live by faith, as the prophet Habbakkuk wrote. ... Why should we study Romans? This letter, Paul's magnum opus, instructs us on the most essential doctrines of the Christian faith. The book is expansive, containing the most words of Paul's epistles. It has been described as the key to understanding all scriptures. This book is vitally necessary to the life of the believer. John Chrysostom, an early church father, had Romans read to him every week. Luther and Augustine credited the book as instrumental in their salvation. Romans contains the lengthiest instruction of all Paul's letters. Paul had never been to the church in Rome. Paul preached unity. He introduced himself as a bondservant of Christ, subjugated to the lordship of Jesus. He preached sin as a destructive slavery and salvation as liberation with total devotion to the Savior. He affirmed his calling as an apostle, holding the office by Christ's choosing, even though he was a persecutor of the church and of Christ. He had become a minister of the Gospel. The meaning here is that no one is beyond the reach of God's power, Paul being the foremost of sinners. Who can God not save? No one! Paul testified to the church that he was set apart for the Gospel. He was God's chosen instrument from before the foundation of the universe. He received a direct visit from Jesus, and he taught not the word of man. Paul sought to draw all attention to Christ, Him and Him crucified. Earthly preachers in our time shouldn't dare to improve upon the Word given. Paul presents the Promise made in eternity past though the prophets of the Old Testament, God's word. All prophecy points to His Son encapsulated in the Gospel. His Son, the Messiah, is the powerful reigning Lord, confirmed by God through the power of the resurrection. He is able to save to the uttermost. Within the Gospel is the command to believe. The Rev. David Huffman officially accepted a call extended by the congregation of North Greenville Church to become the second pastor of the church. Pastor Huffman accepted the call prior to morning worship on June 2, 2024. His first sermon as pastor marked the beginning of a preaching series on Romans. His installation service will be announced at a later date.Pastor Huffman has filled pastoral positions at Rowan Presbyterian Church (ARP) and Oak Ridge Presbyterian Church (ARP), along with staff positions and internships at First Presbyterian Church Columbia, SC, and First ARP Church, Lancaster, SC.
