The Church: Moving Forward (Acts 2:42-47)

Rev. William L. BarronRev. William L. Barron, June 4, 2017
Part of the Morning Worship at North Greenville Church series, preached at a Sunday Morning service

The early church shared needs, worshiped together, broke bread together. They have unity and commitment; they were devoted to right teaching. The church shares a common creed, in our case the Apostles' Creed. Breaking bread together most likely means the Lord's Supper. We observe two sacraments together as commanded by Christ until He returns. Breaking bread later talks about eating together. At the old testament Pentecost, they met together in homes sharing meals. They prayed together interceding for each other; this is the real priesthood of all believers. All of us are priests for all of us. Having all things in common is not socialism or communism. It is meeting each others' needs. Barnabas was the example; Ananias and Sapphira was the counter-example. We bear things together out of love for each other, but more because we love God. Where does church growth come from? From God, who blesses the church when it displays love. God gives the growth, as we get on our knees. God gives the increase as we trust and walk with Him. We "walk by faith, not by sight."

Acts 2:42–47 (Listen)

42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved.
