Let’s Study Ezekiel!

March 20, 2020 by Don Woodard

Since November, our Wednesday Evening Prayer/Bible Study meetings have presented Pastor Barron’s study on the Book of Ezekiel. This book of visions looks ahead to the impending destruction of Jerusalem and the exile of the last group of Israelites to Babylon. This is one of the times in redemptive history when repentance is too late … [Read more…]

Now we come to Zechariah's second vision. He sees four horns, which represent earthly power that has scattered God's people. God also uses horns of power for His purposes. Hannah referenced this giving her power to bear a child. David referenced God's power of refuge. Some suggest the number four as meaning all-encompassing or surrounding. Next, Zechariah sees four craftsmen. These could be God's means of correcting disorder and tumult, using craftsman to pound the earthly powers into submission. Persia could be such a craftsman as the world's first superpower. As part of the Persian Peace, Cyrus sent the Jews back to Jerusalem. The craftsman could also symbolize the rebuilders, or God's workmen, who took on the task of restoring Jerusalem and the temple. God uses insignificant people to defeat earthly power. Peter, an uneducated man, countered the Pharisees and Sadducees. Jesus, the humble man/God, has defeated Satan. The earthly authorities didn't even know who Jesus was until Judas pointed Him out. Paul teaches us that Jesus is the image of the invisible God (Col. 1), who holds the universe together. God used a humble priest, Martin Luther, to rise and bring reformation to the Church. We also are God's craftsmen, specially fitted to bring together His people through the spreading of the Gospel. ... See MoreSee Less

Judah went into exile in around 597 BC. Zechariah wrote his prophecy in about 520 BC, at the time of the return. The exiles journeyed back to Judah under the leadership of Sheshbazzar, who was a son of deposed King Jehoiachin in the lineage of King David, as was Zerubbabel. The return was authorized by the Persian king Cyrus, who gave back all of the temple furnishings. Zerubbabel returned to organize, followed by Ezra, Nehemiah and Zechariah, 42,000 people in all. Zechariah received seven visions from the Lord. The first concerned a red horse ridden by a person of renown. He was seen in a glen along with horses of other colors. Myrtle trees were present in the glen. These trees were commonly used by the worshipers during the feast of tabernacles to construct their tents. The purpose was to remind the people of the time they spent in the wilderness. Isaiah 55 described how the thorns would become cypress and the briars would become myrtles. Nehemiah brought in palms, olives and myrtle trees for use in the resumption of the feast. The angel patrolled the earth and reported the earth to be at rest. Yet the angel and the people did not want to be at rest. Darius had become king, and God's people wanted their freedom. The angel prayed a model prayer to God asking for freedom, and God answered that He still loved Jerusalem and would bring her discipline to an end, bringing judgment on those whom he had chosen to judge. Babylon, Medea and Persia would pay the price. God has returned to the people's presence with mercy. They no longer would be discouraged, and God sent Ezra and Nehemiah to encourage the people in the restoration of Jerusalem. God brought comfort. Today, we see evil everywhere, yet God is in control. Angels are still reporting and praying for God's people. We need God's comfort, and we are to comfort and correct one another. We must love one another, knowing that it is a privilege be a blessing to one another as God cares for His people. ... See MoreSee Less

Fear is behind our pride, doubt and anxiety. Jesus pronounced to us peace and patience; thus, we should not fear or be troubled. Our risen savior bestows upon us peace as the answer to fear, and patience in the face of our sin. The resurrected Jesus revealed himself to the apostles and as with them, He is merciful to take care of our souls. Jesus pronounced to them a special greeting, "Peace be upon you," which mirrors the Aaronic blessing of the Old Testament. The disciples were apparently frightened, perhaps from guilty consciences. Jesus responds by proclaiming peace instead of scolding them. He says the same to us, so there is no room for fear in us. Isaiah in Chapter 9 proclaims that in Christ, the gloom is over. Available to us is peace with God and with our consciences. We should have no doubts about our salvation or our reconciliation, including situations such as illness, family destruction, occupational destruction or marriage fracture. Jesus can fix all these. He has ripped up our bill of debt and bestowed peace upon us. We should likewise delight in bestowing peace upon others in the Church and in the home. Do we tend to dredge up grudges? Extend peace. To the apostles, Jesus extend a mild rebuke for unbelief--there is no room for this. We must realize that the faith that extends peace and patience is never against reason. Scoffers never apply reason, and there is no room for irrationality in Christ. We must look to the patient Christ and cast all our fears at His feet. ... See MoreSee Less

Luke, the physician, wrote about the life and ministry of Jesus Christ and the growth of His church in Acts. Caesar Augustus was known for his ruthlessness early in life and his reasonableness as Rome's first emperor. He ordered a census to be taken about 8 BC and hence thereafter every 14 years. Herod, the ruler of the Jews in Jerusalem, died in 4 BC. Jesus was probably born about 5 BC. Luke's account of these events persuade us of his authenticity and of events that really happened. They all mesh together and fulfill the words of the Old Testament prophets. Caesar Augustus represented the foremost world power of the day. Jesus in his humiliation embodied the power of God. The census was inconvenient to the people of that time. They all had to travel to their home towns. This is why there was no room for Joseph and Mary in the inn. The nativity story serves to persuade us of the overwhelming depravity of man which required in the fullness of time Christ's humiliation was so deep and profound. We deserve death, yet Christ emptied Himself of His glory and communion with His Father, to suffer and die on the cross for us. Jesus' coming was absolutely necessary for our salvation. Because he lives, we live. The census was a means of control over the people. Yet it was ordained by God, the Lord of history, so that Jesus could be born in the city of David. God is still in control and is at work through His church. ... See MoreSee Less

We welcome Rev. Breno Macedo, returning to the North Greenville Church pulpit January 8. A native of Brazil, Pastor Macedo earned an electronic engineering degree, and then felt a strong desire to help the church by embracing pastoral ministry. He earned his Master of Divinity degree at Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and there acquired the crucial foundations for the pastoral task of teaching, preaching, and counseling. The pulpit become more than a merely ministerial duty: it became passion.Rev. Breno MacedoDuring this time, Breno also developed a strong appreciation for historical theology and the doctrine of God’s covenants. This fascination led him to pursue further studies and at Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary he investigated the development of covenant theology, focusing in the works of forgotten first principal of the University of Edinburg Robert Rollock. Now in his doctoral program at PRTS, he focuses on the devolvement of preaching during the reformation and post-reformation era, giving attention to early modern England. He is presently Adjunct Professor of Applied Theology at Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary and pastor of Messiah’s Independent Reformed Church in Holland, Michigan.Visitors are welcome.
